Tour and Talk: St. Anthony Falls Laboratory and Triclosan in Minnesota Lakes

Monday, November 17 at 5:30 p.m.

Join fellow alumni and friends as University of Minnesota Professor William Arnold (Ph.D. Johns Hopkins '99, MS Yale '95 and BS MIT '94), from the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geo-Engineering, discusses his research that found triclosan (the antibacterial ingredient in anti-bacterial hand soaps) and dioxins derived from triclosan in lakes around Minnesota. His work shows that the products we use daily wind up in unexpected places and it was the catalyst that led to MN banning triclosan in this past legislative session.

The event will also include a tour of the St. Anthony Falls Laboratory which has just completed major renovations of its facilities. It is a world class interdisciplinary fluid mechanics research and educational facility. Their research focuses on sustainable engineering solutions to major environmental, water, ecosystem, health and energy related problems. The facilities include a wind tunnel, the outdoor stream laboratory and facilities to build scale models of river systems.
