Discuss Uncle Tom's Cabin or Life Among the Lowly by Harriet Beecher Stowe

Date:   November 12th, 2019
Time:   7:30 PM
Author Selection:  Harriet Beecher Stowe
Book Title:          Uncle Tom's Cabin or Life Among the Lowly
                             Published in 1852

In the period leading up to the Civil War, the book was credited as a vital antislavery tool.
However in recent years the negative associations with "Uncle Tom's Cabin"  pretty much have overshadowed the historical impact of the book.

By negative associations:  the dark-skinned "mammy" the "pickaninny" stereotype of Black children and the dutiful, long-suffering "Uncle Tom" faithful to his white masters.

"Uncle Tom's Cabin" was the second best-selling book of  19th century America, following the Bible.

Perhaps of interest, to be reminded of authors who were near contemporaries of Stowe.
Frederick Douglas, "Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglas" 1845
Nathaniel Hawthorne, "The Scarlet Letter" 1850
Herman Melville, "Moby Dick" 1852
Henry David Thoreau, "Walden" 1854
Walt Whitman, "Leaves of Grass" 1855
et al, for you to add.

Noteworthy, the Classic Fiction Book Club has expanded to include non-classics and non-fiction and is now called the Harvard Book Club.
