Harvard Book Club - Zoom Meeting

Discuss The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas 1802 to 1870 - Thursday, February 13th (discussed over two meetings)
7:30 pm to 9:00 CDT by zoom

Dumas is most celebrated for the novels The Count of Monte Cristo, The Three Musketeers, The Corsican Brothers, The Man in The Iron Mask and The Black Tulip. The Black Tulip was among the first novels The Harvard Book Club read. Dumas wrote in a wide variety of genres and published over a total of 100,000 pages in his lifetime.

Dumas was of aristocratic background, nevertheless he had to deal with discrimination related to his mixed-race ancestry. His paternal grandmother was an enslaved Black Haitian woman; his father was at the time the highest ranking Black in any European army.

Dumas' response to a man who insulted him about his African ancestry has become famous, to quote as follows:

My father was a mulatto, my grandfather was a negro, and my great-grandfather a monkey.  You see, sir, my family starts where yours ends.
