The Turn of the Screw by Henry James (1843-1916), first published in serial format in Collier's Weekly from January 27 to April 16, 1898.
It is not often that you see a Henry James novel described as a page turner.
The Turn of the Screw is an unfamiliar phrase but a very appropriate frame to the story. My edition of The Turn of the Screw is a mere 134 pages, the last few paragraphs will confirm the author Henry James' description that "..... it is a sinister tale, a trap for the unwary....",
The Turn of the Screw has garnered a reputation as the most analysed and ambiguous ghost story in the English language and remains his most widely adapted work in other media. James wrote other highly regarded ghost stories.
