August 1914, the polar explorer Ernest Shackleton boarded the Endurance and set sail for Antarctica.  The objective was to cross the last uncharted continent on foot.  After battling its way through a thousand miles of pack ice, and in January 1915, a mere day's sail short of  the destination, the Endurance became locked in an island of ice.

Quoting the New York Times review, April 19, 1959:

"The (Lansing) book is one of the great adventure stories of our time - great because it is faithful to reality......Lansing had access to diaries and personal accounts......these supplemented what he learned directly from the survivors....the book is a harrowing as well as a thrilling, reading experience".
